A rare crystal
centred Koroit Nut Australian Opal BE
SURPRISED!! If you think
of Australian opal as the white, rather plain looking stone
that you see in cheap jewellery then you are about to be
amazed... Most of the
Australian
opals from
Yowah and Koroit that you will see here are amazing
natural artworks, with brilliant colours and fantastic
patterns. Yowah
Opals come in
several forms, the most valuable are crystal centred opal "Nuts" like the one pictured above from
our own private collection. Yowah and
Koroit matrix
opals like the
one on the right are also highly prized. Also known as "Aboriginal
Art Opals" and as "Picture Stone Opals". Read more
about them by clicking the "Our Opals" link. A Yowah Matrix Australian Opal , Blackgate Opal

WHAT YOU WON'T
FIND HERE! We
don't sell opal doublets or opal triplets. These are
manufactured by glueing thin pieces of opal onto a backing of
stone or even plastic. All of the Yowah opals,
Koroit opals and boulder opals that we sell are
100% natural products that we cut from the rough opal
and polish ourselves. Brian and Liz in our opal mine at Yowah
TRUST AND
REPUTATION! We have sold thousands of
our Australian opals to buyers
right around the world. Many of our regular customers have gone on
to become personal friends. We have also been selling
opals on eBay since 2001. and have an eBay shop selling the
same type of Australian opals that are on this site. WHO ARE
WE? We are a
family business of opal miners and opal cutters
located in Australia. Most of the Australian opals that you
will see in this web site are cut and polished by us. We mine
underground at Yowah Opal
Field during
the winter and spend the balance of the year cutting our
opals. The photo on
the left shows our opal mine at Yowah. Liz is lurking
in the background. The underground mining is done by hand using a
jackhammer. All of the opals are individually cut by hand on
diamond faced grinding wheels. When we
aren't mining or cutting opals we are travelling the
opal fields looking for more rough opal. If you would
like to get an idea of life on the Australian Opal fields
please click here. Visitors are welcome whether we are at our opal
mine or we are at our house on the coast (about two hours drive
south from Brisbane) cutting opals. We don't
have a shop, but you can browse through our opals or just
come in for a "cuppa" and talk opals with a couple of fellow
opal addicts, or even try your hand at cutting an opal
in our workshop. If you see
an Australian opal
on this site that
you are interested in but would like more information, just send us
an e-mail. THE
PICTURES All our
opals are solid natural stones. They are not treated in any
way except for being cut and polished, unless specifically
stated. The photographs are not touched up, and are taken under
a 50 watt halogen desk lamp. The opal may appear darker
in normal interior lighting, and will look best under bright lights
or in sunlight. It is
difficult to capture all of the beauty of opal in a still
photograph. Part of its wonder is the changing colours and sparkles
that you see when the opal is rotated under bright lights. When you
receive one of our opals you will get a pleasant surprise, as
they are almost always better than they appear in the
pictures.
